58-year-old Denise Weber, president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Colonial Volunteer Fire Co. in Hamilton, New Jersey, was recently arrested for pocketing $23k worth of bingo deposits for the organization.
She had worked over 30 years for a college and was approaching retirement in 2016. What she used the money for was not disclosed but an investigation launched on December 7th after a tip that approximately $20k was missing from the bingo fund. Weber had failed to make a total of 21 deposits dating back to 2014.
Sherri L. Bauerle, president of the Colonial Volunteer Fire Co. made a statement expressing the utter shock felt by the organization. She reassured those that had played bingo over the last year or so that their prizes were unaffected by the theft from the ladies auxiliary account.
"This resulted in the inability of the auxiliary to support the general operation of the fire company, the acquisition of furniture, payment to scholarship asardees and other charitable contributions," according to the statement.
Her sentencing has not yet been announced. It’s a shame that we live in a society that doesn’t allow us to work on the honor system but you have to wonder who was doing the accounting for the organization and how they missed 21 deposits and $23k.
